What’s This RC Drifting Buzz All About?
RC drift cars are what we are discussing here and I promise to explain you the concepts behind drifting of rc cars.
Do you recall rc cars cutting across sharp turns with skilled manoeuvres from the driver? Ones that tend to sway about their front wheels with the rear wheels drifting laterally at great speeds to align the cars along the sharp contours of the road. These kinds of cars are called radio controlled drift cars.
If you have been into rc hobby for even a short time by now you know that the rc cars are modelled after real life cars. They are essentially the scaled down versions of the originals. The similarity goes to a great extent not only in terms of look and feel but in the mechanisms governing the cars as well. Needless to say those specific rc cars follow the drive mechanisms of their real life counterparts.
RC Drift Cars Drive Mechanisms
To understand the mechanism that helps radio controlled drift cars in drifting you must know about the various drive mechanisms in cars or more specifically rc cars.
There are mostly three types of drive mechanisms used. They are
- Front wheel drive
- Rear wheel drive
- All wheel drive
In front wheel drive the power from the engine is transferred directly to the front wheels. There is no real power transfer to the rear wheels. On the opposite end when a car is rear wheel drive powered that means the power from the engine goes to the two rear wheels. In case of wheels the power is distributed between all the four wheels.
So which drive is great for rc drift cars?
I would go with either rear wheel drives or four wheel drives for
rc cars drifting
. Most rc drift cars consist of rear wheel drives but then the four wheel drives are efficient as well. I recommend having a shaft driven transmission. These are better than belt driven ones as far as drifting is concerned.
Nitro or Electric RC Cars for Drifting?
Drift cars can be either nitro driven or electric powered. The electric models have an advantage over the nitro models in the sense that the nitro models could burn the clutch which is not the case in electric rc cars. Typically electric cars can be better handled and show better response during drifting as compared to the nitro driven ones.
Tires for Radio Controlled Drift Cars
Drift cars tires are different from normal rc cars. That’s understandable looking at the purpose they are supposed to be used for. Usually the tires for drifting are made of PVC. This adds in durability and controls the temperature rise because of the friction. Sometimes ABS pipes are used for making tires for drifting cars.
