Build Your Own RC Car

Now that you have decided to build your own rc car, we will help you make this attempt of yours a roaring success.

Before diving in lets understand a couple of things that will be your takeaway from this DIY project.

Any building from rc kit project gives you the following advantages

  • Learnings

You get to learn the intricate functionalities of a rc car. You get to see first hand how different parts are attached and how they work in tandem starting right from power generation in the engine to power transfer through the drive train onto the tires. Trust me this kind of knowledge is going to be of immense help later on when you get down to trouble shoot mechanical problems associated with your rc car. At the end of the day time taken in going through the learning curve is well worth of it.

  • Economical

Building your own rc car from kit is any day economical as compared to buying a ready to run car of similar configuration. Moreover at times you have the option of going for more powerful parts which can be had individually at a cheaper price as compared to its value when pre built into the rtr car.

  • Customization

When you build your car you have the flexibility of customizing it to suit your needs. Be it as basic as changing the decals or as complex as replacing a motor to enhance performance, you get complete control over the car’s features. Some times I have seen basic rc car models being customized beyond recognition. This is not possible when you go for RTR rc cars.

Difficulty level of any project will depend upon the complicacy of the kit. For example electric cars are easier to build as compared to nitro rc cars. Your experience is a critical factor in deciding how difficult a project would be. If you are just starting off then you may consume a lot of time for a specific assembly. This time however will go on reducing as you gain experience.

So if you spend a lot of time while you build your own rc car be rest ssured its going to pay off while you take up maintenance activities going forward.

Pre Requisites and Tips to Build Your Own RC Car

Any rc kit from recognised manufacturers that you purchase comes with complete well illustrated instructions. Following the instructional manual to the last word will ensure that you don’t loose track. You will need a lot of time and patience to go through the building process.

Some of the pre requisites of diving into a rc car building project are mentioned as below

  • Instruction Manual

Keep the instruction manual ready before you start building. This should always be kept within reach for ready reference. You can avoid a lot of frustration and save some time by going through the instruction manual before taking any steps.

  • Marker and Writing Pad

There will be hundreds of small parts in the kit. You will need a marker and a notepad to take note of them. More over this will help you in marking any special instructions or locations that might need your attention later.

  • Work Table and Trays

You got to have a worktable that receives ample amount of light. It’s advisable to cover the table top with a white towel or table cloth. White color will aid in better visibility of the components. Using trays will help you organize different components in a better manner. It’s always helpful to mark the trays with labels such that you know which tray contains what.

  • Tools

Collect the required tools before starting the project. You will need some basic tools like screw drivers, pliers, knives, blades, flush cutters etc. Lubricating materials will be helpful especially in those parts where you will find interference fit. Soap acts as a good solid lubricant.

Once you are ready to build your own rc car follow the manual for step by step instructions and start building. Take time off between sessions to avoid frustration and improve productivity. Do not think of completing the entire project in one go. These are time intensive work and you should be mentally prepared for that.
